HomeBase™ Home Server Powered By HipServ™

Here’s a linux powered alternative to Windows Home Server.  The HomeBase Home Server from Axentra is powered by their HipServ system and allows users to store and share their media files via their home network or across the Internet as well as facilitate backups.  The unit will be available Q1 2008 and prices start at $699 for the 1 terabyte version.

The Axentra website has an interesting page on a beta VM (Virtual Machine) version of the HipServ which can be run on a Windows machine (currently only available to OEMs).

“Axentra™ Corporation today announced the debut of its HomeBase™ Home Server.  Available in one- and two-terabyte versions and powered by Axentra’s award-winning HipServ™ media server software platform, HomeBase gives users an unprecedented ability to manage, store and share all types of media files with family, friends or at home through a multitude of devices—from PCs and TVs to mobile phones, digital picture frames, digital media players, even the Sony Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 game systems.

By making its top of the line, all-in-one home server appliance reference design available to the general public, Axentra is offering the most advanced iteration of its HipServ media server software directly to consumers.  A powerful and feature rich home server appliance, HomeBase showcases the growing collection of HipServ add-on services created by Axentra and its partners.

HomeBase puts users’ digital photos, music and videos at their fingertips whenever, wherever, and more conveniently than ever before.  For example, HomeBase allows users to simply drag-and-drop digital content, making it easy to catalog photos, videos and music in standard shared folders or private, user-specific folders.  The server also makes it easy to share content with friends and family members over the Internet from anywhere in the world via Axentra’s www.myhipserv.com secure Web portal.  Through this portal, individuals can view or listen to files over any standard Web browser, or via many mobile devices using the www.myhipserv.mobi mobile interface.

Furthermore, HomeBase employs an innovative array of four interconnected, ultra-fast hard drives.  The multiple, RAID5 configured drives not only help to ensure fail-safe storage and playback of large media files, but also considerably increase performance for fast local and remote media serving.

“HomeBase is a very powerful home server for anyone in the market for a solution that unifies the devices in their digital home,” said Niall O’Driscoll, vice president of marketing and product for Axentra Corporation.  “It is the ultimate solution for anyone who wants total command of, and access to, their collection of digital media files, as well as for easy backup and synchronization of their important documents.”

Vast Array of Devices
HomeBase supports a remarkable range of devices and standards.  Music, videos and photos can be accessed by many digital media players that are UPNP A/V and/or DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compliant.  The built-in iTunes™ server can stream audio to Macs or PCs equipped with the iTunes client, while videos and photos can be viewed on TVs and digital picture frames.

Owners of Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3 game systems can use these platforms to access multimedia files as well.  In fact, Axentra’s HomeBase home server is powerful enough to drive content to multiple platforms and devices all at the same time.  Whatever the need, HomeBase can support it!

Backup/Sync Solution
Beyond its function as a home media server, HomeBase performs flawlessly as a backup solution
for PCs and home networks.  Its gigabit Ethernet speed and huge capacities make backups of critical files and folders quick and convenient.  For offsite backup capability, third-party removable storage devices can be linked via HomeBase’s USB ports; the device will also support off-site backup directly from within the HipServ interface via the purchase of Axentra’s HipServ Advanced Security Subscription (available end of Q1 of 2008).

Pricing and Availability
The Axentra HomeBase Home Server will be available for purchase directly from Axentra, as well as through select online retail outlets, beginning at the end of the first quarter of 2008.  Two versions will be offered: a 1 TB/256 MB RAM version for $699.00 (SRP), and a 2 TB/1 GB RAM version for $999.00 (SRP).”
