New Trent iCarrier Heavy Duty Dual USB Charger Review

We all have gadgets that seemingly need endless charging and the nature of our favourite mobile devices means that they are often away from a mains power source.

Smart phones and particularly modern tablets like the iPad have even more demanding charging requirements. For the last four years I’ve been using a little external USB battery pack, but its single 1amp output and 3400mAh isn’t cutting it any more. A recent 36 hour snow-provoked powercut was the final straw so I started looking around for something a bit more meaty.

Enter the New Trent iCarrier IMP120D Heavy Duty Dual USB 5V/3A charger. This latest version is available for around £40 and has 2 ports, a 1A one for smartphones and a 2.1A one for iPads and other power sucking gadgets that require more current to charge effectively. It’s charged with the included wall wart style AC adaptor in around 10 hours (this would be more like 15 hours if it relied on USB for charging). Once its battery is full you can re-charge 2 of your devices simultaneously. It’s hard to convey the capacity this unit has, perhaps the best way is to tell you that its 12,000mAh of power can charge an iPhone 5 to 100% 6 times over!

That translates to around 55 hours of video playback on an iPhone 5 4S 4 3Gs 3G and iPod Touch 1G to 5G, 120% charge for an iPad 2 and even an amazing 80% charge for the latest generation iPads with their enormous batteries. The iCarrier is weighty but it’s small enough to fit in your hand. We’ve tested the unit over the last couple of weeks and are really pleased with its performance. In fact the only small negative we could come up with is that the blue LED’s that show when its on and the remaining capacity are a little dim.
