PS3 IR Remote Control at Last

Nyko BluWave

When we finally got our hands on our very own PlayStation 3 earlier this year, we were surprised and annoyed to find Sony hadn’t included a built in infrared receiver.

The oficial Sony remote control (an optional extra) is a bluethooth device, and while ordinarily we’d welcome an RF option, it seems very short sighted not to also have included the option of using IR. Sony wants to position the PS3 as a “media hub” in the living room, and with its HDMI and Bluray credentials many owners use their PS3s in their home cinema setupy. Now, we can all use our IR universal remotes to control our PS3s, thanks to this new $20 Blu-Wave Infrared Remote addon from Nyko.

“Easily control the next generation of home entertainment with the Blue-Wave Remote from Nyko. The Blu Wave allows you to easily control the playback of Blu-Ray movies, DVDs and CDs on the PlayStation 3 console. Utilizing infrared technology, the Blue Wave can navigate system and movie menus, skip chapters or tracks, pause and play a movie or music and replicate other PlayStation 3 controller functionality from up to 25 feet away. The compact USB IR receiver plugs into any open USB port for easy set up requiring no complicate software, pairing or programming. The Blue Wave is powered by 2 AA batteries (included).

  1. This product is terrible. It does not turn the PS3 on.

  2. wouldn’t be surprised if this is just a single-box version of the ps2 USB/ps2 DVD remote trick. That was unable to turn it on, navigate XMB, or much else outside of, well, start/stop watching a movie…

  3. Well…starting/stoping, pausing FFW, RWD etc is all I need it for, and without it my Pronto IR remote that controls the rest of the home cinema can’t do any of that.

Got mine on eBay for £8. Well worth it 🙂
