Synology Releases NAS DiskStation Manager v5.0

Last month in our Synology 1813+ NAS review we mentioned DSM v5 was undergoing beta testing and was waiting in the wings.  Well today Synology have announced the first public release of DiskStation Manager (DSM) 5.0, their latest NAS operating system for DiskStations and RackStations.  Check out the full PR and links below.

Revamped user experience: The interface has been overhauled with clarity and simplicity in mind, helping users to get on with their works instantly. High-resolution mode is available when launched with Ultra HD or Retina® display supported devices. QuickConnect service now supports all mobile apps and most packages from Synology, providing anytime, anywhere connection without complex router configuration.

Streamlined IT management and scaled-out deployment: Synology Central Management System (CMS) offers flexibility and convenience for IT administration to manage hundreds of NAS through a single interface. CIFS scale-out cluster solution is also made possible, enabling enterprises to scale storage capacity up to a petabyte quickly and easily,

Versatile cloud solutions: Cloud Sync maximises data protection by allowing users to sync files stored on Dropbox, Google DriveTM and Baidu Cloud with Synology NAS. 2-way sync between different Synology NAS servers is now available with the introduction of Cloud Station Client for DSM, providing efficient data utilisation as well as automated data redundancy.

Coherent and efficient backup: Synology Snapshot Manager, the new software plug-in available for VMware® vSphereTM and Windows®, provides application-consistent snapshot to guarantee data consistency. Block-level incremental backup technology is integrated for multiple backup versions, greatly increases storage efficiency.

All-round performance boost: SSD read-write cache is supported to reduce I/O latency. iSCSI random read performance is enhanced by over 6 times. Memory compression technology is adopted to provide smoother user experience for applications running on DSM.

Optimised multimedia and mobile experience: Tree view of albums and options to share videos and photos to YouTubeTM and Flickr® are available for Photo Station. Video Station now supports AC3 pass-through on Apple TV® for better audio quality. DS file is revamped in an intuitive interface, bringing thumbnail view, file archiving, and sharing links on-the-go. DS video now allows users to save videos for offline viewing. DS photo+ for AndroidTM can now stream photos to big screen via Apple TV, while DS audio and DS video for both Android and iOS now support ChromecastTM.
